A Day at Wilkinson: Leadership, Learning, and the Power of Showing Up

It was 8:00 a.m. when I arrived at Wilkinson Elementary School in Sarasota to meet the principal, Ms. Nations. As excited as I was to be there, I’ll admit I was also a little nervous. That didn’t last long.

The morning bell rang, and suddenly the campus came alive. Hundreds of students poured into the car loop and through the school doors, filling the space with energy, movement, and possibility.

The visit was part of a Sarasota County Schools leadership program that invites local business owners and community leaders to spend a full day inside a school — not as observers, but as participants. The goal is simple: gain firsthand insight into the daily responsibilities, challenges, and impact of the people who keep our schools running.

My day moved quickly. I spent time with the school resource officer, the custodian, food service staff, and members of the administrative team. Every single role carried its own weight and importance. I also had the privilege of meeting many of the Wilkinson “Wildcats” staff and leadership — people who don’t just dedicate their workdays to students, but their lives.

The passion inside those walls is real. You can feel it.

Three classrooms invited me in to read to the students. I brought a few Mo Willems books and leaned fully into character voices and storytelling. The kids were engaged, sharp, and full of personality. I also had the chance to experience the STEAM Program at Wilkinson — and all I can say is, WOW. The creativity, problem-solving, and curiosity being nurtured there is something special.

By the end of the day, I was exhausted — but the good kind of tired. The kind that comes from being inspired, welcomed, and reminded of why community matters.

Being named an honorary Wildcat was an absolute highlight.

To the students, teachers, staff, and administration at Wilkinson: thank you for welcoming me with such open arms. I’m grateful for the opportunity to meet you, learn from you, and witness the incredible work happening inside your school every day.

To the Wildcats — continue to grow, learn, support one another, and strive to be your very best. You’ve got this.

A Note to Our Community

If you see a need — step up. It doesn’t have to be financial.

Spend a day at your local school.
Ask what kind of help is needed.
Offer support, care, and positive encouragement.

Your time and attention truly go a long way.
